My star trails came out as dotted lines because I forgot one setting on my intervalometer
Two Saturdays back I drove out to a dark spot near Joshua Tree to shoot star trails over some rocks. I set my intervalometer to 30 second shots with a 2 second gap and let it run for 90 minutes. When I stacked the 180 frames at home, every trail had a gap in it instead of being smooth. Turns out my cheap intervalometer counted the 2 second delay inside the 30 seconds, so each shot was really only 28 seconds long. I switched the gap to 0 and shot 40 second frames instead, and the next stack came out clean. If your trails look like a dotted line, check that gap setting first before you blame your lens or your stacking software. Has anyone here run into a shutter delay that made their trails look broken too?
A buddy of mine had the same thing happen with his Canon and a cheap remote, except his gap was the mirror slap eating into the exposure time. He fixed it by turning on the mirror lock and adding a second to the delay, and his trails finally connected. Check that setting too if the gap fix alone doesn't do it.
