PSA: One random guy at a star party changed my whole view on photo editing

I used to spend hours in Photoshop making my astro shots look perfect with noise reduction and heavy sharpening. Last month at a meetup in Flagstaff, this older guy named Dave leaned over my laptop and just said 'You're fixing stuff that isn't broken.' He showed me his raw Orion Nebula shot with zero edits, just a 5-minute stack in DSS and a tiny curves tweak. The detail was better than anything I'd ever polished for 2 hours. Now I keep my processing under 15 minutes max and the images look way more natural. Has anyone else had a stranger change their whole workflow with one simple tip?

Had a similar thing happen at a dark sky site in Oregon. A guy named Frank looked at my stacked Andromeda and said "you're killing the stars with that noise filter." He showed me how to just use a light luminance layer and a tiny bit of unsharp mask. Cut my editing time from an hour to maybe 10 minutes. What did Dave show you specifically about stacking that made the biggest difference?

That Dave guy in Flagstaff sounds like my hero. I remember showing my first processed M42 to a buddy and he asked why it looked like a watercolor painting. I had the noise reduction cranked so high it smoothed out all the dust lanes. Funny thing is, I spent six months thinking I was a master editor and really I was just a master of ruining my own data. Now I barely touch the sliders and my images actually look like space instead of someone's Instagram filter gone rogue.
