Shoutout to the ranger at Cherry Springs who told me to ditch my phone for astro photos

I was up at Cherry Springs State Park last summer during a new moon trying to get a shot of the Milky Way with my phone clamped to a tripod. Some ranger walked by during a lull and just said "you're fighting a losing battle with that sensor." He pointed at my phone and laughed a little. That stung but he was right. I went home and sold some old camera gear I never used and picked up a used Canon 6D for $400 off Facebook. First night out with it at a local field I got a shot of Andromeda that actually showed the dust lanes. The phone could never do that. Has anyone else had a random stranger totally change how they shoot the night sky?

That thing about the ranger laughing and saying "you're fighting a losing battle" really hits. It's like in life where someone just tells you the hard truth and it stings for a second but then sets you free to go do something better. I feel like most of the time we're just stubbornly trying to make things work with the wrong tool until someone calls us out on it.

Ditched a broken truck finally. Got a bike instead. Never looked back.
