Stood under a Bortle 1 sky in West Texas last year and it ruined suburban stargazing for me forever

I drove out to the McDonald Observatory dark site near Fort Davis. Looked up and saw the Milky Way so bright it cast shadows on the ground. Now every photo I take from my driveway feels like a joke. How do you guys deal with light pollution ruining your shots without dropping thousands on filters?

Is it really that serious though? Lots of people shoot from their backyard with budget gear and still get great results.

Ever tried shooting from a high mountain pass to get above the haze layer?
