That chat with my cousin about the Orion Nebula photo really changed how I see my own shots
My cousin (who knows nothing about cameras) asked me last weekend why my photo of Orion looked so plain compared to the Hubble version. At first I felt defensive, but then I realized she had a point. I've been shooting the same targets with the same settings for 2 years (just stacking more frames each time) without thinking about composition or processing. She said "why take the same picture everyone else has?" and that hit me hard because she was right. So last night I tried a different angle (lower to the horizon) and added some foreground trees to my Andromeda shot. The result wasn't perfect but it felt like my photo for once. Has anyone else had a random comment from a non-astronomy person actually improve their photography?

Read a Ken Rockwell article that said basically the same thing about breaking out of comfort zones.
