Was stacking filters like a fool for 6 months before a guy at Kitt Peak pointed it out
I kept stacking my UV and light pollution filters together on my Canon T7 for deep sky shots until an old timer at the visitor center told me that extra glass was just killing my star sharpness, and now I'm wondering if I botched all my Andromeda shots from that whole Nebraska trip.

That 0.1% loss in sharpness from an extra filter isn't gonna ruin your Andromeda shots unless you were already pixel peeping at 400% on a 4K monitor. Most people's images are way more ruined by bad tracking or light pollution than a piece of glass that costs 30 bucks. I stacked filters for a year on my old Nikon before someone told me, and my albums still look fine when I scroll through them on my iPad. Unless you were shooting at f/2.8 with perfect skies, you're probably the only one who notices that "damage.

Honestly, @reeselewis, you just changed my whole view on this! I used to be one of those guys who would freak out about adding anything extra in front of my lens. I thought even a single UV filter was basically ruining every shot I took. But hearing you say you stacked filters for a whole year and your photos still look great on an iPad really hit home for me. I spent way too much time worrying about tiny sharpness loss that nobody else would ever see. You're totally right that bad tracking and light pollution are way bigger problems than a cheap filter. I'm gonna stop overthinking this and just shoot more.
