I finally hit 300 hours on my new orbital sander and it changed my whole view on tool life

I always thought you just ran a sander until it died, maybe got a year or two out of it. My old one gave out around 150 hours, so when I got this new one, I figured that was the normal lifespan. I started keeping a rough log just for fun, and when I crossed 300 hours this week, the thing still runs smooth and quiet. It made me realize I was probably pushing my old tools too hard, not cleaning the vents enough, and using the wrong grit progression which caused extra wear. Now I see that with basic care, a good tool can last way longer than I gave it credit for. It's not just about buying it, it's about actually maintaining it. How many hours do you guys usually get out of your daily driver sanders before they need major work?

My buddy burned through two sanders in a year before he learned about cleaning the dust filter. He was convinced they were just cheap tools, but that simple step totally changed the game. His current one is past 400 hours and still going strong.

That's the kind of mistake you only make twice, I guess. He spent more on two dead sanders than he would have on a good shop vac. It's wild how the simplest maintenance gets ignored until it costs you real money. You almost want to see the look on his face when he finally pulled that clogged filter out. Bet he felt like a genius for figuring it out and a total fool at the same time.
