Old timer at the shop in Amarillo told me to slow down on my block sanding, and he was right
Spent 2 hours redoing a fender I rushed in 45 minutes because he said 'son, you're not sanding, you're just scratching,' and now I want to know if anyone else had a mentor who called out your bad habits like that?
My uncle Ray did body work for 30 years and he told me the same kind of thing back in 2009. I was doing a door on my first truck and he picked up my sanding block, looked at it, and said I was pressing way too hard and moving too fast. He made me slow way down and use lighter pressure with longer strokes. Took me almost 3 hours to fix what I messed up in 30 minutes. He said the paper does the cutting, not your arm. I still hear that in my head every time I pick up a block.
