Pro tip: a painter with 30 years in told me to stop blocking primer with 180 and my sandpaper bill dropped $60 a car
He said it at his retirement lunch in Fresno and I thought he was just old school, but three jobs later the trash can full of loaded paper doesn't lie. Anyone else still hitting primer with 180 out of habit?
Nobody talks about how primer grit choice changes what your topcoat does later either. I switched to 320 on epoxy primer and my base coat laid down flatter with less orange peel, which meant I could spray one less coat of clear on some jobs. That savings adds up way past sandpaper money. The old guy was right but for a different reason than he probably knew. Primer scratches telegraph right up through everything you put on top of them.
