Took me 6 years to figure out I was sanding body filler too dry

I was at a shop in Denver watching a guy knock out a quarter panel repair and he kept his block moving way more than me, then he said 'you can always add more water but you can't un-sand that panel.' Now I keep my paper wetter and my passes shorter, anyone else learn this lesson the hard way?

Man I learned that same lesson on a hood that took me forever to block out. Kept loading up my paper because I thought it was faster, ended up with a wavy mess that I had to reprime and start over. Your buddy was right, wetter is always better with filler work.

Did you end up just resurfacing the whole thing or did you manage to save some of it? I've done the exact same thing more times than I care to admit, honestly it's kind of embarrassing how many hoods and quarter panels I've had to redo because I got greedy with the filler. These days I treat it like I'm painting with watercolors or something, thin layers and lots of patience, even if it takes three coats instead of two. My old man used to call me "two coats and a prayer" until I finally listened to him about taking it slow.
