Unpopular opinion: aftermarket panels are fine for most daily drivers, and the 'OEM only' crowd is costing you money
I have been doing collision work in the same shop outside of Cleveland for over a decade, and I am sick of how many techs act like you are a hack if you do not push OEM steel on every single job. Here is the truth though: for a 2015 Camry with 140k miles, the customer does not care about the stamping on the inner fender, and paying an extra $400 for an OEM part on a car worth $6k is just silly. We started using CAPA certified aftermarket fenders and hoods on older commuter cars two years back, and our comeback rate for fitment issues is barely different from when we used factory metal. The difference is we now actually finish jobs in three days instead of five because we are waiting on the dealer to ship a part from who knows where. If you are doing high end restoration or the car has a warranty, sure, go OEM, but stop scaring customers into paying double for no real gain. Anyone else here had pushback from their shop owner about this, or is it just me?
