Why I finally quit spraying clear in my unheated garage all winter
A painter named Dave at the supply shop in Fort Wayne kept telling me not to shoot clear below 65 degrees, and I figured he just wanted to sell me shop time. Last January I sprayed a door in my 40 degree garage and got a milky, hazy finish that took me two extra days of wet sanding to fix. Bought a $70 propane heater the next week and ran it for an hour before mixing, and the clear laid down flat on the first pass. I still feel dumb about that wasted door, but now I check the thermostat before I even open the can. Anyone else running a cheap heater setup, or do you just wait for spring?
Man, I read a post on a body shop forum last year where a guy did the same thing and swore the cold was the problem, and everybody in the thread told him it was actually moisture in his air line. Turns out his trap was full of water and the cold just made it worse. Either way a warm shop fixes both, so your heater did you a solid. I keep a cheap milkhouse heater going for a couple hours before I mix and it has not let me down yet.
