A customer in my shop argued that tire rotations are a waste of money

He said he'd driven for 30 years without one and never had uneven wear. I showed him the inside shoulder wear on his front tires from a neglected alignment. Has anyone else had to convince a customer a basic service is actually worth it?

Are we really acting like a few thousand extra miles on a set of tires is some kind of disaster? Most people drive their cars into the ground way before uneven wear from skipping a rotation actually ruins anything. I've seen guys run tires with the inside edge showing cord and they still got another 5,000 miles out of them before replacing. Doesn't the real problem come down to people just not checking their pressure or getting alignments when they hit a pothole?

Honestly, showing them the physical proof is the only thing that works sometimes. People trust what they can see over what you tell them. I've pointed out the feathering on tread blocks before and it clicks for them. It turns a theory into a real problem they need to fix. Saving money now just costs more later when you need a whole new set of tires early.

Exactly, seeing the worn tread in person makes it REAL and impossible to ignore.
