A customer in my shop yesterday said he'd rather pay for a new engine than a $200 diagnostic fee, which really stuck with me.
He argued that a flat fee for a mechanic's time to find the problem was a waste, while I see it as the most important step to avoid throwing expensive parts at a guess, so where do you all stand on convincing customers of the value of proper diagnosis?

But what if he's right about the fee being too high?

Have you seen the full breakdown of costs?

Did anyone catch that breakdown the city council posted on their site last week? I was scrolling through it and noticed they listed a bunch of stuff like admin fees and overtime for the project managers. The way they broke it down, the main cost driver was that fee for the permits, which was way higher than I expected. I remember reading in the local paper that some other towns charge about half that for similar permits, so it makes me wonder if they're padding it a bit. That's why I'm leaning toward the fee being too high, just like Derek is saying.
