Can we talk about how the old guys at the track swear by brake cleaner and I think it's wrecking more than it fixes
I was at a dirt track outside Lincoln about 3 months ago helping a buddy with his late model and every single guy in the pit was hosing their rotors and calipers down with brake cleaner like it was holy water. An old timer named Dale looked at me funny when I said I mostly use soapy water and a wire brush on the hub face and told me I was gonna get somebody hurt. Here's the thing though, I've been pulling calipers apart for 11 years and the ones that get soaked in brake cleaner are the ones with dried out seals and glazed pads way more often than the ones that get wiped down. That stuff strips every bit of oil off the metal, including the stuff that's supposed to be there, and it flashes off so fast you don't even see what it's carrying into the piston bore. I've seen slide pins come out looking like chalk after a season of that routine. I'm not saying never touch it, but I think a lot of guys use it as a substitute for actually taking the bracket off and cleaning it right. Dale still isn't talking to me. What are you all actually using on a car that sees mud and water every weekend?
