I finally chose the used Snap-On scanner over the cheap Amazon one

Spent a week going back and forth between a $400 used Snap-On scanner from a guy in Dayton and a $120 Amazon special. Took the gamble on the cheap one first, and it couldn't even read the ABS codes on a 2012 F-150. Returned it, drove 45 miles for the Snap-On, and had the whole issue diagnosed in ten minutes. Anyone else burned by budget scan tools when you're just trying to get a car out before the shop closes?

Three hundred and forty bucks for that used Snap-On feels like a steal compared to the headache you dodged. I had a cheap OBD2 reader that would just blink at me on a Honda once, and I ended up guessing on a fuel pump that was fine. Spent two days and returned a part I couldn't use, so I get the frustration of being cheap and paying for it in time. That drive to Dayton sounds worth it now, especially with a closed shop and a customer waiting on you. Once you get a scanner that actually talks to the modules, you never want to go back. Good call on making the trip.
