My old mentor Ernie told me to stop guessing at electrical gremlins and buy a $30 test light, and it changed how I diagnose
Back when I was a lube tech at a shop off Route 9 in Poughkeepsie, an older guy named Ernie watched me swap parts on a no-start for two hours and finally handed me his old test light. He told me to stop throwing parts at it and just follow the circuit until the light died, and we found a bad ground strap in under ten minutes. I still keep that same test light in my top drawer, and I use it before I touch a scan tool on anything electrical. What is the one cheap tool you reach for before anything else?
Wondering how long it took you to trust the light over the meter, because that was the hard part for me. My fluke sits in the bag most days now and the cheap light with the pointed probe does 90 percent of the work. Do you still chase voltage drop with a meter after the light points you to the bad leg, or does the light alone usually close the case for you? Ernie sounds like he saved you a lot of parts cannon money either way.
