Old guy at the junkyard taught me about torque specs in 30 seconds

Was pulling a junkyard engine in Albuquerque last month and this retired mechanic walks by while I'm fighting a stubborn bellhousing bolt. He just says "you're gonna strip that, kid" and hands me a breaker bar with a pipe over it. Then he tells me torque specs on paper are for clean threads and new fasteners, but in the real world you gotta feel the stretch. Showed me how to tell when a bolt is about to give by the sound it makes. Saved me from a helicoil job for sure. Anyone else have a random stranger at a yard drop some knowledge that stuck with you?
