That $80 "lifetime" scan tool paid for itself in one afternoon

Picked up one of those cheap bluetooth OBD2 adapters off Amazon for $80, mostly out of curiosity. My 2012 F150 started throwing a P0420 code last Tuesday and the local shop wanted $160 just to tell me it was the catalytic converter. I plugged the thing in, watched a YouTube video, and found out it was actually a bad O2 sensor venting the whole time. Fixed it myself for $45 in parts. Has anyone else had one of these budget scan tools actually save them from a shop visit, or am I just lucky?
