The 2008 Ford F-150 that made me quit trusting my ears

Back in 2015 at a shop off Route 66 in Tulsa, a customer brought in an F-150 with a knock I swore was a rod bearing, sounded just like the classic death rattle to me. I quoted them $2,400 for a short block rebuild, but the senior guy next to me said to check the flexplate bolts first, and sure enough two of them had backed out a quarter inch. Ever since then I'll spend an extra 20 minutes on the easy stuff before I start tearing down an engine, how many of you got burned early on by a noise that turned out to be something dumb?

One thing though, a backed out flexplate bolt on these trucks usually doesn't sound like a rod knock at all, it's more of a light tick or rattle that changes when you put it in gear or load it up. A real rod bearing knock is deeper, it's there cold and warm, and it gets worse under load and matches engine speed, not converter speed. I've seen loose flexplate bolts fool plenty of guys, don't get me wrong, but if it sounded exactly like a rod knock to you then maybe it was both things going on. The senior guy was right to check the cheap stuff first though, no argument there, that's just good sense. I've eaten crow more than once chasing a noise I was sure about, and it's always the dumb stuff that gets you.
