Unpopular opinion: hitting 50 years in this trade isn't all it's cracked up to be

I just passed 50 years at the same shop in Akron, Ohio, and everyone keeps congratulating me like it's something special. But honestly, I think staying put that long made me miss out on learning new systems from other shops. The older guys here just want to rebuild carbs all day, and I'm the only one willing to touch a modern ECU. Has anyone else found that staying loyal to one place actually held back their skills?

That "bounce around" thing has some truth to it @patkelly. Your mileage may vary though, some guys just hate change.

Saw a piece on Jalopnik the other day about how the best techs are the ones who bounce between shops every 5-10 years. They said you pick up weird tricks from old timers at each place that you'd never learn staying put. Makes me wonder if you're right about missing out on the ECU stuff, cause that's where everything's heading now.
