Booked my own truck spot in Phoenix instead of waiting on a broker, saved $340
I needed to move my Civic from Phoenix to Portland and every broker kept quoting me $1,100 with a 2 week pickup window. I got tired of waiting so I called a small yard in Phoenix directly and asked if they had a truck heading north, and they squeezed me in for $760 with a 3 day window. Does anyone else just skip the brokers and call yards direct, or did I get lucky here?
Saved $340 calling a yard direct is real. I read a thread on a car shipping forum where a guy did the same thing from Tucson to Denver and cut about $300 off the broker quote. The catch is you gotta be flexible on dates since those little yards only run north when they got a full load. Brokers just mark up the same trucks anyway, so you basically skipped the middleman.
Man, the flexible dates part is what gets people every time. You said the little yards only run north when they got a full load, and that is the whole deal right there. I feel for anyone stuck on a tight schedule because they end up paying broker prices no matter what. It stinks that saving real money means you gotta sit around waiting for a truck to fill up. But hey, $340 back in your pocket is $340, and I would wait a few extra days for that any time.
