Debate: is a covered trailer really worth the extra cash or am I just being cheap?

I shipped my Jeep from Denver to Portland last month with an open carrier for $1,200 and it showed up with a cracked windshield and some rock chips. Now I'm wondering if spending the extra $400 for enclosed would have saved me the headache or if that's just bad luck. Anyone have a similar experience where the cheaper option bit them?
