Had a yard chat with a broker that totally flipped my dispatch routine

I was waiting to load a 2018 Civic out of a lot near Columbus last Tuesday, and this broker just started talking about how he groups runs by region, not by price. He said chasing the highest paying lane every time costs way more in empty miles than people admit. So I sat down with my last 3 months of haul slips, and he was right. I was burning almost 1,200 bucks a month on deadhead runs just to grab those flashy rates. Now I map out a loop first and take what fills the gaps, even if it pays a bit less per mile. Has anyone else tried running their routes this way, or is the price-first habit too hard to break for most folks?

Isn't that just common sense with extra steps though?
