My car carrier straps failed on I-80 near Cheyenne, scary stuff

I was hauling a 2012 Civic from Denver to Omaha last month on a rented flatbed and pulled into a rest stop around mile 318 to check the load, and two of the four straps had gone slack from the wind and bumps. I had to re-tighten everything with a come-along in 40 mph gusts, and it took me an extra hour plus a bruised knuckle before I felt safe again. Has anyone else had straps loosen on long highway stretches, and what do you use to keep them locked down better?

That rest stop near mile 318 is where I learned the same lesson last year.
