Paid $300 for a broker and got ghosted after pickup day

I needed to ship a 1990 Mustang from Phoenix to Portland and used a broker that quoted me $950, so I put down a $300 deposit. They lined up a driver, then the day before pickup the guy stopped answering calls and I never got my money back. Should I just go direct to a carrier next time or is there a way to check if a broker is legit before paying?
