Found a way to shave 3 miles off the Eagle Creek trail in Oregon using an old fire road
I was doing the full loop last month and got tired of the switchbacks near the waterfall section. Noticed a faint overgrown road on my GPS that wasn't on the main map. Followed it for about 20 minutes and it cut straight across to the back half of the trail. Saved me almost an hour. Anyone else ever find random shortcuts like this that actually work and aren't just a bushwhack?

Wouldn't following an old fire road off the main trail mess with all the work the trail crew put into that route though? I get wanting to save time, but those switchbacks are usually there for a reason, like erosion control or protecting the waterfall area. A lot of those old roads were decommissioned on purpose to keep people safe and the land from getting torn up. Guess I'm just old school, but I'd rather earn the view than risk getting lost or damaging the trail.

Earn the view" is a wild take. I'm pretty sure the waterfall doesn't care if you walked an extra three miles to see it.
