I finally saw what the California fire closures did to the PCT resupply towns
Back in 2020 you could still get a ride and a hot meal at most stops, but by 2022 three towns I used to count on had zero services left, and I think the constant reroutes just killed the local incentive to keep hosting hikers.

Yeah, because nothing says "adventure" like shutting down all the bathrooms and gas stations on the way.

Small correction though - most places on the Pacific Coast Highway aren't shutting things down. A lot of the smaller towns rely on that tourist traffic and keep their facilities open year round. There's a few stretches where you gotta plan ahead, like the Big Sur area, but that's been true for decades. The real issue is more about timing than closures. If you hit it during off season or after a storm you might find some places closed for the day, not permanently.
