Just found a way to cut 3 miles off the PCT resupply in Oregon
North of Crater Lake the water sources are garbage. I kept carrying 6 liters because the guidebook said so. Then a trail angel told me to cache a gallon at the Highway 62 crossing. Saved my back for 45 miles of climbing. Anyone else do pre-caches on dry stretches like that?

Pre-caching is the way to go on those long dry stretches. I did something similar on the JMT near Muir Trail Ranch where the next reliable water was 14 miles out. Drove a gallon of water in a bear can to the last road crossing and it made a huge difference carrying less weight up the climb.

Yeah but now I'm just picturing someone with a trunk full of bear cans and a gallon of water, getting asked by rangers what they're up to.
