Showerthought: it took me 4 hours to find out the water source on the Black Range was dry
Hiked the Black Range Crest last month and planned my whole second day around a spring marked on an old map, but it had been dry since 2019 and I had to backtrack 6 miles with half a liter left. I finally found water at a cattle tank off a side road, but those 4 hours of searching taught me more than any guidebook ever did, so now I want to know: how do you all verify water sources before a trip, or do you just carry extra and hope for the best?
Oof, that backtrack with half a liter sounds rough. I call the ranger station for the district now, they usually know which springs are still running or if a tank got filled recently. Old maps are a trap, that spring by me died years ago and the map still shows it blue. If nobody answers I just pack 4 liters and plan my camp near a road crossing so I can bail if it's dry.
