The group chat trail beta that led us off a cliff in Utah
Last month my buddy sent a screenshot of a Reddit thread claiming a hidden route near Moab cut 4 miles off the standard loop, and the comments swore it was easy to follow. We took it at 6 AM and by noon we were staring down a dry waterfall with no way around but backtracking 2 hours. Has anyone else trusted a random forum route only to find out the person who posted it never actually hiked it?
Happens all the time and it drives me nuts. People pull a route off AllTrails or some random blog, never walk it themselves, then write it up like they did. I got burned near Zion last spring, guy swore a "shortcut" existed but the cairns he mentioned were just random rock piles. We spent an hour bushwhacking through scrub before giving up. The waterfall you hit sounds way worse though. Now I check if the poster has actual pics and a date before I trust anything.
