The PCT veteran who told me to skip the water filter tablets was totally right about Utah's desert springs

He said just grab a bandana and boil for 3 minutes instead of carrying a heavy filter, and after 200 miles in the Henry Mountains I never got sick once, anyone else ditch their gear based on local advice?

That bandana trick works great in the open desert where you can see the spring source, but your mileage may vary if there's any mining runoff nearby. A lot of those Utah springs have heavy metals that boiling won't touch, so a filter actually catches stuff the heat can't break down. Just something to keep in mind if you ever hit a canyon with old claim stakes around.

@elizabethf85 heavy metals in that water is no joke. Did you test any of those springs yourself or just hear about it from other hikers?
