TIL a guy on Reddit told me to skip the Sierras in late May. Dumb advice.

Someone in this group said the snow would be fine by Memorial Day on the JMT. I trusted him. Wrong call. Got hit with waist-deep slush at Muir Pass. Had to bail at Bishop after 4 days. Should have listened to the ranger instead.

Rangers see the real conditions every single day. Internet guy probably hiked it once in a dry year and figured that counts. Muir Pass in late May is no joke, that slush is brutal. Your legs just sink with every step. Always bet on the person whose job is to know.

Trusting internet strangers over a ranger is usually a bad bet in any situation.
