Why do people plan the Colorado Trail in July when the San Juans still have snow
I keep seeing trip reports of people starting the Colorado Trail in early July and getting wrecked in the San Juan section around mile 380. Last summer a guy I met near Silverton said he postholed for 6 miles in shorts because he figured July meant summer. The snowpack in that stretch doesn't melt out until mid to late July most seasons, and it matters way more than people think when they pick their start date. Has anyone here planned around the San Juan snow window, or do you just gamble on it?
