A pair of red-tailed hawks have been circling my yard in Springfield for a week straight
They show up every afternoon around 3 PM and perch on the big oak at the back of my property. I'm worried they might be after the songbirds that use my feeders, but I also don't want to scare them off if they're just nesting nearby. Has anyone else had hawks stick around this long without causing problems for smaller birds?

They're probably nesting. Songbirds will be fine, they're smarter than you think.

The nest in my gutter had four eggs last week and now it's just empty shells. Margaret, you really believe the parents just left them on purpose? I watched a crow sit there for twenty minutes picking them out one by one. Smarter than we think doesn't help when the nest spot is terrible and exposed.
