After six months, a pair of house finches finally used the brush pile I made.
I stacked up all my old Christmas tree branches and yard trimmings in the corner by the fence, hoping it would give some birds a spot to hide. This morning I saw two of them actually dart in there when a hawk flew over, which was a huge relief. Do you have any other simple shelter ideas that don't cost much?

Yeah, that's a solid idea from @brooked40 with the pallet. I just leaned an old wooden ladder against my shed and let the vines grow over it, and now it's like a little green cave. Makes you wonder why we buy so much stuff when junk works better sometimes.

Love hearing your brush pile worked. I did something similar with a stack of old clay pots and broken terracotta pieces behind my shed. I just tipped them on their sides and piled them up loosely. It doesn't look like much, but the sparrows and wrens treat it like a little maze to get through. Another thing I tried was leaving a section of my old wooden pallet leaned against the wall, with some dried grass stuffed underneath. It creates a dark, covered space that seems to make them feel safe. It's such a good feeling to see them use these spots you cobble together from nothing.

Absolutely, it's the best feeling when they move in. I kept an old cinder block on its side near my compost bin, just one block, and now a chipmunk family uses it as their front door. Makes me smile every time I see one pop out. There's something special about giving life to what we'd normally throw away.
