Blue jays at my feeder taught me a lesson about peanuts
Read that blue jays can swallow up to 23 peanuts at once in their throat pouch, so I counted one morning and watched a single bird fly off with 8 before I even refilled the tray. Has anyone else noticed they stash way more than they actually eat, or is my yard just a blue jay bank?
My dad clocked one jay at his place in Ohio stuffing 11 peanuts in about 4 minutes, and the funny part is they cache them in roof gutters and flower pots, not just trees. That stashing habit is really about winter backup, since jays hide way more than they could ever dig up again and end up planting a ton of oaks by accident. So your yard is not a bank, it is more like a squirrel with wings lol.
