Dropped $85 on a baffle feeder in Maplewood, now my cardinals are gone and I can't decide if it was worth it
Two months ago I bought a squirrel baffle feeder for $85 at the Wild Birds store in Maplewood after the squirrels chewed a hole in my third cheap plastic one. The baffle works great, zero squirrels, which is honestly a small miracle. But here's my problem: my cardinals and bigger birds stopped showing up almost completely. The perch is short and the seed ports are tight, so only the little guys like chickadees and finches can use it comfortably. I've had one pair of cardinals in eight weeks, down from six or seven daily visits. My wife says we spent $85 to invite fewer birds to the yard. I could swap back to a platform feeder and just accept the squirrels, or add a second feeder to cover both crowds, but that's another purchase and more seed cost every month. So which is it, do you pick one feeder style and live with the trade-off, or do you run two and just eat the extra money? Has anyone here cracked the code on feeding both big and small birds without turning the yard into a buffet?
