Heads up about those cheap plastic bird feeders from the big box store
I bought three of those bright colored ones last spring for about $25 each, thinking they'd be fine. The squirrels chewed through the plastic lids in under a month, and the perches snapped off after one good storm. I ended up losing all that seed to the weather and pests, so that was nearly $80 down the drain. Now I'm back to using my old metal tube feeder and it's holding up way better. Has anyone found a good squirrel-proof feeder that doesn't cost a fortune?

I finally had luck with a metal cage feeder that keeps the squirrels out.

Yeah those cage feeders work great for squirrels, but raccoons are a whole different problem. They can reach right through the bars with those clever little hands. I watched one unscrew the bottom of my "squirrel-proof" feeder last fall. You might need a baffle on the pole too if you get those bandits in your yard.

I saw something about greasing the pole with vegetable oil to stop squirrels... but then you just get a bunch of really shiny, angry squirrels.
