I finally stopped using that cheap seed mix after a chat with a guy at the hardware store
I was picking up some stuff for a job and got talking to the older guy in the garden section. He said the cheap stuff is mostly filler like milo that most birds here in Phoenix just kick out of the feeder. He told me to switch to straight black oil sunflower seeds and a separate suet cake. I tried it last week and my feeder traffic from finches and sparrows has doubled. Anyone else find a simple switch that made a huge difference?

Always thought the mixes were fine until I saw how much junk was left in the tray. Switched to just sunflower hearts and the amount of mourning doves and cardinals went way up. That old guy knows his stuff.

Wait, you were still using the cheap seed mix in Phoenix? That stuff is basically bird junk food around here. I made the same switch years ago and it was like opening a restaurant instead of a dump.
