I just counted 17 different bird species in my yard this month

I started keeping a list on my kitchen calendar at the start of April, just for fun. I figured I'd see the usual robins, cardinals, and house sparrows. But as the days went on, I kept adding more. A pair of rose-breasted grosbeaks showed up at the sunflower feeder last Tuesday, which was a first. Yesterday, I even spotted a ruby-crowned kinglet flitting in the lilac bush. Hitting 17 species really surprised me because my yard is just a normal quarter-acre lot in suburban Ohio. It made me realize how much variety you can attract if you offer a few different things. I have a tube feeder for seeds, a suet cage, a birdbath, and I let a corner of the yard grow a bit wild. Has anyone else kept a monthly tally and been shocked by the number?

I always thought you needed more space, but maybe I was wrong.

Space is a pretty big deal though. It's not something you just shrug off. Maybe you weren't wrong at all.

You can attract a lot of birds without much space!
