My fancy feeder cost me $45 and attracted squirrels instead of finches

I bought this nice tube feeder with metal perches thinking it would keep the big birds away, but the squirrels chewed right through the plastic base in under a week. Just switched to a metal cage feeder for $30 and the finches finally came back. Has anyone else had luck with a certain feeder material that actually works?

Squirrels chewed through my plastic feeder too, metal cage is all that works.

Actually, @kai807, I've had the opposite experience - my cheap plastic feeder from the dollar store has survived three years of squirrel attacks without a single crack. The metal cage ones I tried always bent out of shape after a few months, letting the seeds fall everywhere and wasting my money. Plus, the plastic one is lighter so I can move it around the yard to confuse the little guys (you know, keep them guessing). I think it really depends on your specific squirrel situation, like maybe yours are more aggressive chewers or something. But hey, if metal works for you, that's all that matters.
