Left that feeder alone for a month straight and went from a pair of finches to a flock of nine, so now I'm wondering what else I've been scrubbing that I should just leave be?
Leaving a feeder dirty for a month worked out for you but that does not mean it is a good habit to keep. Nyjer seed can get damp and moldy, and that mold is what makes birds sick, sometimes bad enough to kill them. You got lucky this time, but a flock of nine packed around a nasty feeder is how disease spreads fast through a whole group of finches. Clean the thing every couple weeks and you will still get your birds, just without rolling the dice on their health.
