My neighbor's kid pointed out something about the finches I'd missed for years

I was out filling my tube feeder last Saturday and this 10 year old from next door came over to watch. He asked why all the goldfinches were fighting over the same perches when there was plenty of space on the other side. I told him that's just how they are, but he said no, look closer - the perches on one side were slightly bigger. I never noticed that before, but he was right. Has anyone else had a kid spot something in your yard that you walked past a hundred times?

Oh man, that's wild! Kids see stuff we totally filter out. Last spring my nephew was over and pointed out that the squirrels were only digging in one corner of my garden. I figured they were just being squirrels but he said no, the dirt there was softer. Sure enough, I'd had a leaky hose that had been soaking that spot for weeks without me noticing. Switched the hose and they moved on within a day. Little dude probably saved me a bunch of frustration and I never would have figured it out myself.

What's the kid's rate for pest control work?
