Question about hitting 40 species in my yard and missing the one that got me started
I keep a little notebook of every bird I see from my kitchen window in Rockford, and last Saturday I wrote down number 40, a yellow bellied sapsucker on the old maple out back. Here is the weird part. The whole reason I put up a feeder in 2021 was to get a cardinal, and I still have not logged one, not once. So I sat there with my coffee feeling less proud than I expected and more like I had been keeping score of the wrong thing this whole time. Has anyone else chased a number and ended up wondering why they started in the first place?
