Spent 2 hours trying to figure out why my finch feeder was empty every morning
Turns out a raccoon was swinging on the perches and dumping all the nyjer seed out. Anybody else deal with clever raccoons outsmarting your feeder setup?

Raccoons are just smarter than most people give them credit for, so maybe the real issue is your setup being too easy. If you hang a feeder from a thin wire or use a baffle, they usually give up pretty quick. My mom had one that figured out how to unscrew the bottom of a tube feeder, so I bolted it shut and that stopped the problem. Not saying raccoons aren't clever, but most people just make it too convenient for them.

Just read a study that said raccoons can remember puzzle solutions for up to three years, so @leobrown is probably right that they're just outthinking us. A friend of mine wrapped his feeder pole in greased pvc pipe and that finally stopped them cold. What kept you from going crazy with your mom's raccoon before you bolted that feeder shut?
