Used to dump seed on the ground like a maniac, now I use trays and baffles

For years I just threw sunflower seed straight onto the grass and watched the squirrels and doves clean up. Last month I finally got a metal tray feeder and a baffle after a raccoon literally climbed my fence at 1 AM and scared my dog. Has anyone else had a animal totally change how they feed birds?

Honestly, "climbed my fence at 1 AM and scared my dog" is basically the plot of a horror movie but with a raccoon as the villain. Ngl, I bet that raccoon just wanted to flex on your dog and eat your sunflower seeds in peace. Tbh though, metal tray and baffle sounds like you're fortifying your yard like it's a medieval castle now. Next thing you know you'll be installing a moat and training crows to attack the raccoons. I switched to a tray after a squirrel figured out how to open my cheap plastic feeder and threw a party for the whole block.

Leave the seed on the ground and let nature do its thing. Birds and squirrels have been eating off the ground for millions of years before we invented fancy trays. That raccoon probably just wanted a snack, not to start a war with your dog.
