Washed my bird feeder with soap and water for years before learning the hard way
I always used dish soap to clean my tube feeder, figuring it was better than nothing. Then last spring I noticed less birds visiting, and a friend from the Audubon Society told me soap residue can actually harm birds and deter them from feeding. Now I just use a 1:9 bleach to water rinse and let it dry completely in the sun before refilling. Has anyone else made this mistake and found a better cleaning method?

You had a buddy who went through the same thing? My friend Mike learned this the hard way too. He used to scrub his finch feeder with Dawn every week, just like you said. Then one summer he noticed the finches would take one bite and fly off, some even got a bit wobbly on the perch. A vet friend told him the soap residue messes with their natural oils and can make their stomachs upset. Now he just uses a vinegar solution once a month, hot water and a stiff brush for the rest. Bleach works too but you gotta be super careful with the rinse.

Oh come on, that sounds like overthinking it! A good rinse gets the soap off, and I've been using dish soap for years without any issues.
