Saw two guys get into it at the hardware store return counter yesterday

I was at Home Depot in Dover waiting to swap out a faulty pressure gauge. One guy was arguing for 20 minutes that he deserved a full refund on a used chainsaw, while the worker kept pointing at the 30 day return policy sign. Then another customer stepped in and offered to buy the chainsaw off him for half price right there, which totally defused everything. Is that a good way to settle a bad situation or did that just encourage bad behavior?

Is rewarding the loudest complainer really the lesson we want to teach here?

Yeah, "rewarding the loudest complainer" is a good point but I think everyone's missing something here. Sometimes the quiet people who don't complain are the ones getting walked all over and nobody notices until they quit or snap. We're so focused on not rewarding the loud guy that we forget the silent people who just take it and leave without a word. That's a bigger problem to me because you don't even get a chance to fix it with them, they're just gone.
