That $14 library fine made me realize I was hoarding books I hated

I kept renewing this one novel for 9 months because I felt guilty quitting halfway through. The library charged me $14 in fines before I finally admitted I wasn't gonna finish it. Something about paying that money for a book I dreaded picking up just broke the spell. Now I return anything I'm not into after 50 pages, no shame. Has anyone else paid way too much just to avoid giving up on a book?
